Founded by P.C. Mahalanobis in 1931 and an Institute of National Importance since 1959, ISI Kolkata is arguably the most academically demanding undergraduate programme in India and the global reference point for Indian statistics. The three-year B.Stat (Hons) takes roughly 50 students a year through the ISI Admission Test, and students are paid a stipend rather than charged meaningful fees. Graduates dominate quantitative finance, data science and statistics doctorates worldwide.
