Founded in 1885 by the Deccan Education Society — whose members included Tilak, Agarkar and Chiplunkar — Fergusson is the college most associated with Pune's identity as a university city, and ranks 57th among Indian colleges in NIRF 2025. Its 65-acre wooded campus and heritage main building are Pune landmarks, and its science departments feed IISERs, IITs and research institutes. Both a Prime Minister and a founding figure of Hindu nationalism passed through its classrooms, which says something about the range of its alumni.
